Work Process

Vinettchen the Bat is a children’s story created by Sophia Schmidhofer, Vanessa Denkmair and me for our graduation project at the HTL 1 in Linz. It was conceptualised in 2021 by all three of us, planning things such as story beats, characters and design together.

We decided to create a children’s fable with creatures of the forest that would be unusual  like a snake, skunk or bat to show children that if you’re different you’re still deserving of respect like everyone else. These and other animals are featured on the right side of each page showing their footprints, key facts and a detailed illustration. That way the story can be accompanied by educational information for the readers. The left side features a big illustration following the events of the tale itself.

My parts in this project was the writing of the story, and the layout of the book. The process for writing was fairly straightforward since I knew where to go already. Spontaneous ideas were included as well but of course discussed with my teammates to ensure everyone was on the same page. For the design I had to keep an extra focus on font size, line spacing and legibility so that children would have an easy time reading it.

The takeaway from this project is that with good planning big projects are not so big anymore. Things went pretty smoothly and we even got to publish our book in the end.
